Baking Beauties Tag

Hello everyone! Today I'm collaborating with the lovely Charlotte to bring to you a new tag: The Baking Beauties Tag! Charlotte and I both love to bake and we're really good friends. I met Charlotte in April and even though I've only met her in person 4 times since then, I absolutely love being friends with her! So I'm really happy to be collaborating with her! If you want to do this tag then feel free to do so, we'd be delighted. If you do then please send me a link to it and I'll add it to the end of post.

1. What is the first thing you remember baking?
I think my earliest baking memory is of making butterfly cakes with my granny. If you don't know what they are you basically make normal fairy cakes, cut a bit of the the top off, add some icing, then cut the top in two and stick the pieces into the icing so they look like little wings. I have a lot of baking memories and I find it quite hard to work out what came first. I'm just guessing it's these because they were very easy.

2. What was the last thing you baked?
I made some coconut loaf. It's a very easy recipe but it tastes amazing. This is definitely 'comfort food' for me.

3. Something you've always wanted to bake?
I've always wanted to try making macaroons but I've heard that it's very difficult. I'm not even one of those macaroon obsessed bloggers. I don't think that they're necessarily the tastiest things in the world, I just fancy the challenge.

4. Tell us about a time you baked something and it went ridiculously wrong.
Around Christmas time last year I tried to make leibkuchen which is a German biscuit that's similar to gingerbread. I had already got all of the dry ingredients into a bowl when I realised that we didn't actually have any golden syrup. I hadn't bothered to check because it's normally something that we always have. But we had none. It would have taken me an hour to walk to ASDA and back to get some. I decided to hope for the best and use maple syrup instead. Bad idea. They were horrible.

5. Be honest, do you lick the spoon?
Yes! I'm a definite spoon licker. I remember when we done home ec at school you weren't allowed to and my friends and I used to challenge each other to eat as much cake mixture as we could without getting caught. We ended up with half as much cake as the rest of the class but the teacher never caught on.

6. How often do you bake?
Not as often as I'd like to. I try to bake once a week on a Friday but realistically I often go 2-3 weeks without baking anything. I love to bake but sometimes I just find it really hard to make time for it.

7. What baking success are you most proud of?
When I was younger I always used to look at brandy snaps in the Bero book and thought that they looked amazing. My gran would never let me bake them and kept saying they were too complication. I eventually wore her down and we made them one day(minus the brandy). They weren't even that great but I was just so excited about it.

8. Do you tidy up as you go along or leave one big mess until the end?
I normally leave everything until the end so that I have something to occupy myself with whilst it's cooking/setting. Otherwise I end up pacing about the kitchen. If I'm cooking something and I leave the kitchen I can be prone to actually forgetting and burning things.

9. Do you use recipe books or get them online?
I use some recipe books but mostly I use recipes off of Pinterest. I do really like recipe books but they're very expensive so not something that I ever buy for myself. I do love the Bero recipe book though, I do think that that's one thing every baker should have.

10. Do you stick to the recipe or do you experiment a little?
I tend to stick to the ingredients but I'll adjust the quantities to my own personal taste. For example when making Nutella cheescakes I added more nutella and less cream cheese because I don't like it when cheesecake tastes really cheesey. After my replacing golden syrup with maple syrup experiment I don't like to mix much.

11. Who are your favourite food bloggers?
12. What is your favourite thing to bake?
I'm not very good at remaking my recipes. I often make things once and then leaving it. I like classic things like banana loaf and cupcakes. I also really like baking different styles of brownies. I'm not a massive fan of backing biscuits/cookies because I always muck up my spacing  and they stick together.
