Las Iguanas Glasgow

Friday, 7 August 2015

Hello everyone! Today I'm doing a wee restaurant review. I'm really excited to be writing this as I feel like I've not written one in ages. My problem is that I'm back in my home town for the summer which only had chain restaurants. So when I'm going out to eat it's to Nandos or Wagamamas or Frankie & Benny's. Not exactly worth a blog post is it? But soon I will be back in Edinburgh and hopefully I can get back to reviewing more independent(and more exciting) restaurants. After Scot Blog Meet I decided to go to dinner with Morag and Mimmi. Morag is one of my oldest blogging friends and we have been out for meals quite a few times together. I met Mimmi at the event but I recognised her from comments on my blog and she is such a lovely girl. Her blog is very picturesque and I would definitely recommend you check it out. We went to the Las Iguanas on West Nile Street(Glasgow) as Morag is vegan and Mimmi is vegetarian and they have an amazing selection.  I've wanted to try it out for quite a while but have never had the chance to so I was quite excited to check it out.

Their cocktails are only £3.90 Sunday - Thursday which is something that I really can't refuse. The price of your average cocktail in Edinburgh is like £6-8 so that's pretty good bargain. In actual fact, pretty much everything is cheaper in Glasgow! I decided to go for a Pink Passion Fruit which consisted of vanilla rum, apricot liqueur, passion fruit puree and vanilla sugar. I have no idea why this was called the Pink Passion Fruit because as you can see it was actually yellow. Regardless, it was delicious and one of the nicest cocktails I've had. Morag went for a Strawberry Red and I had a little taste. It was really nice and made up of strawberry liqueur, malibu red, cranberry juice and lemonade. Mimmi also had a cocktail but I didn't photograph it and can't remember what it was. But I think we were all really happy with the drinks!

When looking at the menu the main courses sounded lovely but I kept on being drawn back to the tapas menu. So I decided just to have one tapas dish with a side as well. I went for the Pato Taquito from the tapas menu: rich shreds of roast duck and caramelised onion rolled in a flour tortilla and char-grilled with a side of spicy cranberry sasla. These were absolutely beautiful. Duck is one of my favourite meats and whilst I was dining with two veggies I really couldn't resist it on the menu. The meat was really tender and well cooked and the flavours in the dish worked well. The salsa made a really nice addition too, much nicer than your standard tomato salsa. It was a little bit of a messy eat though! On the side I had a portion of Patatas Bravas In Bits: spicy spuds on sticks with smoky chipotle sauce and creamy aioli. Which were also absolutely amazing. I especially loved the sauce which just complimented them amazingly. I am seriously drooling writing this post. Everyone loved their food but we were all too stuffed to consider dessert.

I feel like I have to mention this in the post. I'm not trying to have a big moan but I have to mention this as it did make me feel a little uncomfortable. When we paid for our meal we were due around £5 in change. We waited for about 15 minutes and no one had brought us the change so we asked another waitress who went and spoke to the waitress who has served us. There was a bit of confusion as the waitress had assumed that our change was a tip. Normally I would leave a tip but £5 was a bit much and I don't think the waitress should have just assumed she could keep our change. She apologised and returned our change but we ended up leaving without leaving a tip at all because we were a bit shocked by the whole thing.

We absolutely loved our meal at Las Iguanas. The food was really tasty and there was so much variety on the menu. The little mishap at the end of the meal kind of let it down but I would still return to this restaurant. What do you think?
