The Most Popular Posts of 2016

Wednesday, 4 January 2017

My blog has changed a lot over the last year so I guess I have to start off by thanking those of you who have stuck around! This year I totally changed my blog design (which I love) and cut down considerably on the frequency of my blog posts. I used to love daily posting but the reality of daily posting is that it just isn't manageable around university so I cut back to posting once a week during the semester. A move for quality over quantity.

One of the oddest things I've found about my blog is that it's always the posts I think are going to be amazing that crash and burn whilst the ones I think are just ok end up doing the best. I found it really interesting when I looked back at my most popular posts of the year as a lot of the time they were quite unexpected!

In January I shared some goals that I wanted to complete before my 20th birthday. If I'm honest I thought I'd done terribly but now that I look back on the list I've actually completed a lot more than I thought I had done. I don't turn 20 until the 20th of January so I may be able to tick off a few more before then!

I published two posts about cities in the Netherlands in February and surprisingly my post about Leiden was actually more popular than my one about Amsterdam! Leiden is a gorgeous city and I'm so glad that I decided to take a quick day trip there as it was so beautiful and I loved it there more than Amsterdam.

Taking a look at what my bedroom looked like in my 2nd year flat. Whilst student flats aren't the most glamorous of places I think posts like this do well because people are just intrinsically nosy. I do miss this flat a little because it was an amazing location but I think my current room is much nicer so I'll need to get around to doing an equivalent post!

In April I shared some tips on how to promote your blog. My blog promotion has definitely fallen by the wayside over the last few months as I've been so busy with university so maybe I need to take some of my own advice!

Oops, I didn't actually blog at all in May. It was a really busy time with exams etc so I took a little break which I think was ultimately the right decision. I will most probably do the same again this year.

At the end of May, I took a two-week trip through Canada and the US visiting family and friends. It was amazing and I wrote a lot of blog posts about it. My two favourite cities were Toronto and Boston but ultimately Toronto has won with the most popular blog post (sorry Leda).

Whilst New York is a wonderful city, I didn't quite fall in love with it the way that I fell in love with Toronto and Boston. Ultimately, I still had a great time but I wrote about my experience and why I didn't quite feel it lived up to scratch.

I've done some amazing travelling over the last year but that's not to say I don't love Edinburgh. As the Fringe rolled around I shared some of my favourite cheap/free things to do in Edinburgh. I think this city is a wonderful one to visit if you're on a budget as there are so many things to do here that won't break the bank.

The lovely Leda was kind enough to take me along when she was invited to review Foundry 39 for the student newspaper. This bar has the most amazing chicken wings I have ever eaten and an extremely packed and unique cocktail menu. I'm also super proud of my photography from this post.

In October I blogged about one of my favourite meals. I was invited along to try out the new menu at Chaophraya so took my friend Kathryn along. We were both super impressed by the decor, service and the waulity of the food. I'd definitely recommend the duck tamarind as it was such a delicious dish.

This semester was extremely busy and it made me question why I continue to blog when it can be a very stressful and time consuming hobby. In this post I discussed all the positive influences my blog has had on my life and why I'm glad to call myself a blogger.

Debenhams challenged me to share some of my favourite Christmas memories on my blog and I was more than happy to oblige! I've discussed food, the Edinburgh Christmas market and my favourite Christmas songs.

Here's hoping that I continue blogging over 2017 as it's going to be a very exciting year for me.
