Sunday Spiel #2

Sunday, 29 October 2017
Life has been pretty hectic. I've had some amazing trips all over the US and had some fantastic opportunities and experiences. But sometimes I feel like that's really taken over my blog and that I've not written anything about my regular day to day life in forever. So I've decided to write about 10 things that have been making me happy recently so that you all don't think that I spend my entire life jet setting across the US because I a) work 40 hours a week and b) mainly use trains because flights are super expensive here.

1. Updating my blog design.
I absolutely loved my old Water Painted Dreams header but after rebranding a few months ago to Honestly Russell, my blog's just had basic designs that I made myself. I wasn't super keen on them and I finally got around to commissioning a new piece of work. My new header is an abstract art design that the lovely Kelly did for me. I absolutely love it. I had some colours in mind but gave her the freedom to do whatever and I'm totally smitten with the results. I'm maybe considering updating my layout too but for now, I'm happy with this little revamp.

2. Using the library.
I'm a huge reader so one of my worries about moving to the US would be that I'd end up with a tonne of books and have to donate them all when I leave. However, my local library has an amazing selection and I've really been enjoying visiting every two weeks. Not only has it saved me a tonne of money but it also allows me to be more adventurous with my reading. When I'm buying books I only want to spend money on ones I think I'll really enjoy but if I'm getting them for free I'll take chances on things I might never have looked twice at before.

3. Weekly bakes.
I've been having little get-togethers for Bake Off every week. It's so much more fun watching the show with others and I'm glad that I get to share this little piece of home with my new friends here in the states (who are mostly Canadian but who's taking notes?). I've been baking every week for it and I'm really enjoying it. I've found some great new recipes and it's a little self-esteem boost that my friends seem genuinely enthusiastic about my baking (my family always say I'm not good at it!).

4. Not freezing my butt off at this time of year.
I expected it to get pretty cold pretty quickly and don't get me wrong, I'm sure it still will, but it seems that will be happening later in the year than I'm used to. It's still hitting maximums of 20 degrees around here almost every day - even if it is a little chilly in the morning. In fact, I even think I might have gotten a little bit of a suntan walking downtown last weekend. It's the end of October!

5. Fig jam and brie toasties.
Holy shit this is a marvellous combo. Like, I would eat this for lunch every day if that was socially acceptable. It makes me a little sad as brie is definitely not cheap here but it's so delicious and such a quick and easy thing to cook too. Although I guess if I'm getting in touch with my new found inner American then I guess I should be calling it a grilled cheese.

6. Hitting the 4-month mark.
Last Sunday was my 4-month moved-to-the-US-anniversary. My biggest fear about moving here was that I'd hate it, be constantly homesick and want to go home. I'm not saying it's been a walk in the park, I got ill and it made me super homesick for a solid 3 weeks but I feel like I'm on the other side of that. And I now may have some super fun hospital bills arriving in the post. But having hit the 4-month mark, it's hitting me that I'm already one-third of the way through. And it's flown by. And for the first time, I feel like this is manageable. I've got this.

7. Catching up on some bomb Scottish blogs.
I've not been doing a lot of blog reading over the last few years if I'm entirely honest. After starting university I just became far too busy to stay updated with a tonne of blogs and tended to stick to my favourites. But some new favourites of mine are The Monday Project and Linsey Lou Blogs. I've really been enjoying reading through their posts and both blogs are written by awesome Scottish girl bosses. Keep rockin' it ladiez.

8. Feeling less materialistic.
I've essentially ended up with an accidental capsule wardrobe because that's what happens when you move across the world with one suitcase. I'm not saying I haven't bought any new clothing (Target I love you) but I've been so much more selective. And I've realised that I own a lot more stuff than I actually need. I don't miss anything I left in the UK at all. I actually wear all my clothes that are here with me on a weekly basis and it feels so much nicer than having a wardrobe full of clothes that I never actually wear but can't quite bring myself to get rid off. A little piece of me can't wait to get back to the UK so that I can have a ruthless clear out.

9. Crocheting again.
It's been a few months since my last crochet project but this week I ordered some new wool and got to work. I ordered enough chunky yellow yarn to make 3 of All About Ami's Jumbo Triple Luxe Cowl and some grey yarn to make the regular Triple Luxe Cowl. I've made the regular cowl before as a Christmas present and really liked the pattern so I'm excited to have one of my own to keep me warm throughout the winter. I might keep one of the yellow ones for myself too but the others will make good Christmas presents. I started my Christmas shopping when I was in Vermont but I'm keeping it relatively chill this year as I need to consider what will fit in my suitcase.

10. Organising a murder mystery party.
I've always seen murder mystery parties in movies and on tv and thought they looked like such good fun. So I finally got around to organising my own. I ordered a cheap kit from Amazon and asked my friends to keep Halloween night free. The invites are out, I'm planning my costume and I am so excited. I'll keep you guys updated on how it goes!

Let me know what you've been up to lately in the comments.

  1. Fig jam and brie?! Actually salivating here, that sounds epic. Baking (or at least snacking) along with Bake Off is the best, I'm sad it's ending this week...
