Broadway Review: Waitress

I absolutely love going to the theatre. I've never been too keen on the cinema but I've always found that the theatre just captures my attention so much more. I can sit in the theatre and stay captivated for hours. Seeing as I have the benefit of living about an hour from Broadway for the next year - I really wanted to make the most of it by trying out some new shows. Whilst a few of the classics are on Broadway at the moment, the first show that I went to see was Waitress. This show has been getting a lot of attention at the moment as Jason Mraz has joined the cast for a few weeks but before he joined the tickets were pretty cheap and we were able to bag some for $45 each.

The show is funnily enough about a Waitress, called Jenna, who finds herself unexpectedly pregnant. Her husband is a bit of a loser, who drinks a lot and expects her to spend her entire paycheque on their bills etc. With the help of her fun friends at the diner, she sets to try and save up to leave him. There's a romance along the way with her new OB-GYN (who Jason Mraz is playing) and things take some unexpected twists. The songs were also written by Sara Bareilles who is one of my favourite singers so I was super excited about this.

Hands down this was one of the best shows I have ever seen. It was laugh out loud funny and had a much younger sense of humour than most of the shows that I've ever seen. The set was really fun, colourful and had enough changed that it was exciting but not too many that it was distracting. The cast has changes a little but all of them were fantastic. I did struggle to make out some of the words on the songs but that's maybe because I was a little unfamiliar with the songs. I've since listened to the soundtrack a few times on Spotify.

Considering we went into the show with very little knowledge about it, we both really enjoyed the show and were pretty blown away by how good it was. If you get the chance to go and see it I would definitely recommend it. I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to get tickets when Jason Mraz is in it as the tickets are so much more expensive but if you can get a good deal I'd recommend it.
