2018 Travel Plans

Sunday, 28 January 2018
We're only a few weeks into 2018 and I'm already booking some trips for myself and thinking about where I want to go this year. This year I'm focusing on making those last few American trips before moving back to Scotland in June. Then after that, I'd like to see a little bit more of Europe. I'm so much more confident in my abilities to conduct an excellent weekend break but I know this won't be as accesible whilst doing a masters year. Therefore, I think most of my travelling will occur in the first half of the year. Although a little Christmas trip would do me nicely too!

South Carolina and Georgia Road Trip
My first trip of the year (excluding my flight from Edinburgh back to the states) is a road trip through the American south with the one and only Jess! We're taking advantage of the President's Day long weekend and taking a little bloggers trip to Charleston and Savannah. I'm flying into Myrtle Beach SC, Jess is picking me up and we are driving the two hours to Charleston. We're spending three nights there and will be taking a day trip to Savannah which is just over the border with Georgia. I'm excited to spend time with Jess, experience Southern hospitality and escape the cold of the North East for a while!

Chicago Weekend Break
I've also booked a weekend break to Chicago for the beginning of March. It's a shorter trip and I'm only away for 2 nights but there's not a huge amount on my do to list for the city so I should be able to crack on with it all in the time available. I got a really good deal on a hotel so I'm looking forward to a bit of R&R and some good food. I'll also be seeing a friend who is there on her year abroad so it will be great to catch up. Hamilton is also on in Chicago and I'm strongly considering booking a ticket, they aren't cheap but much cheaper than in NYC.

Return to Boston
This isn't a formal plan but my Canadian family are looking at booking a trip to Boston in early April and if they do then I'll get the train up from Connecticut to go and meet them. I've been twice before but I love the city so certainly wouldn't pass up the opportunity to go back. This time I'd like to go to Salem on a day trip to see some witch hunting stuff and maybe do a whale watching tour if it's in season. And of course, no trip to Boston is complete without cannoli! That being said, I'll miss hanging out with Leda and her family.

Weekend in Maine
Maine is the only New England state that I haven't visited and I'd like to take a little weekend break there. Hopefully, when it gets a little warmer so that we can enjoy the fantastic coastline and some of the freshest seafood in the country.

My visa expires in June and I think I'm going to go to Canada for a week or so before I return to the UK. I have family in Ontario who I'd like to go and spend some time with. Toronto is one of my favourite cities so I'd love to go back but it would also be great to see more of rural Ontario. I would also love to do a road trip to Montreal with my friends sometime but I'm not sure how much time we actually have now. Hopefully, it's something we could work out!

Tallinn & Helsinki
Last year Becky and I went to Riga and had a fantastic trip. We want to see more of the region so have discussed taking a trip to Tallinn and Helsinki. There's a 4-hour ferry trip between the two capitals. We haven't set dates or anything but I'd really love to try and make it happen if I have time this summer (everything is so up in the air).

One of my close friends moved to Birmingham after she graduated and I'd love to go down and visit her at some point over the year. It's got good connections to Edinburgh via trains so I can easily make it down for a weekend. I've actually been before because my dad lived in Telford for a while but I'd love to go back and see more of it. I also know a few bloggers in this area and it would be great to meet some of them in person too.

Eh, so, I've never actually visited the UK's capital. Which is a little embarrassing to admit. My mum went once, didn't like it and so wouldn't take me as a teenager. And then when I was old enough to travel by myself I was always drawn to visiting other countries first. But I'm determined to try and visit London at some point this summer with my friend Sarah. I want to see some of the big sights, eat fab food and shop at the Lush on Oxford Street.

My mum's expressed an interest in going to Poland which is really out of character for her as she's very much a poolside lady. But she did say she wants to visit during the winter. It's her 50th birthday in November so I'd like to try and organise a trip for that. I'm thinking either Kraków or Warsaw so please send any recommendations for those two or other cities in Poland that would be good for a wintery weekend break.

I know it's a lot but I'm one ambitious traveller! Where are you heading this year?
