Dinner at The Urban Fox, Edinburgh

Sunday, 16 December 2018

A few weeks ago, I was invited down to The Urban Fox in Edinburgh to try out their festive menu. The set menu had lots of great options and I had some fantastic company with some other bloggers (Lorna, Charlene and Beth) so I was certainly set for a good night. The Urban Fox is relatively new on Edinburgh's restaurant scene and is located in Newington. On arrival, we started with a lovely mulled wine which helped me warm up as it blowing an absolute gale outside.

The decor at The Urban Fox is really quirky and fun. Foxes are snuck in all over the place. Unfortunately, it was quite dark by the time we arrived as Edinburgh winters are no joke so my photos are a little dark. I haven't quite mastered manual SLR photography yet! That being said, all the food was beautifully presented and delicious which is the most important thing.

For starters, I'd ordered the crayfish and avocado salad with a horseradish cream dressing. It was delicious. I'd had crayfish a few times before, it's very similar to prawn if you haven't tried it. It goes beautifully with avocado and the horseradish gave a bit of sharpness to the dish. Combined with some delicious garlic croutons and some fresh veggies, it made for a lovely start to the meal. Some of the other girls had the winter veg soup which also looked delicious and the portions were massive.

Moving onto the main, I again opted for the fish course. Salmon fillet with lemon butter, new potatoes and parsnip puree. The fish was cooked beautifully, succulent and melt in the mouth. The potatoes were fantastic. and the parsnip puree was creamy and not too strong. The other mains on the menu includes a traditional Christmas dinner, pork tenderloin and a vegetarian goats cheese Wellington.

If sticky toffee pudding is on a dessert menu, 9 times out of 10 I'll be ordering it. All of us had the same thinking, sticky toffee puddings all round. Thr Urban Fox have the largest portion of sticky toffee pudding I have ever seen. It was a little excessive, as no one could finish theirs, but it also meant that no one went home hungry! A delicious, warm, sticky toffee pudding finished with cinnamon ice cream. The ice cream was absolutely amazing and made a difference to your usual vanilla.

All in all, the set Christmas menu at The Urban Fox is fantastic. The portion sizes won't disappoint and at £22 for two courses or £26 for three, it's extremely reasonably priced. The restaurant has a fantastic atmosphere and would be perfect for a cosy meal out too.

The Urban Fox is located at 19-21 Causewayside, they don't have a website but check out their Facebook for more info.
